Hydrocarbon substrate richness impacts microbial abundance, microbiome composition, and hydrocarbon loss

چکیده
Manipulating the taxonomic richness of communities can impact numerous community functions. One proposed explanation is that certain taxa exploit resources or habitat space others cannot, leading to additive contributions process rates. It interest learn whether reverse could also be true. That is, increasing in an environment size, composition, and function? We mimicked hydrocarbon spills uncontaminated soil by introducing individual substrates all possible combinations hexadecane, fluorene, pyrene at four total concentrations, along with a crude oil treatment. hypothesized substrate would increase microbial abundance, diversity, function. When single was added, we observed lower bacterial fungal abundance (qPCR) relative controls receiving no hydrocarbons. Interestingly, however, regardless concentration, increased as number added increased. large changes loss based on specific combinations, but this not clearly linked richness. These results show introduced has strong influence other processes may depend more properties compounds.

Hydrocarbon degraders establish at the costs of microbial richness, abundance and keystone taxa after crude oil contamination in permafrost environments
Oil spills from pipeline ruptures are a major source of terrestrial petroleum pollution in cold regions. However, our knowledge of the bacterial response to crude oil contamination in cold regions remains to be further expanded, especially in terms of community shifts and potential development of hydrocarbon degraders. In this study we investigated changes of microbial diversity, population siz...
متن کاملSubstrate Marking by an Invasive Ladybeetle: Seasonal Changes in Hydrocarbon Composition and Behavioral Responses
The multicolored Asian ladybeetle, Harmonia axyridis (Pallas), aggregates inside dwellings during the winter to survive the cold. Recent published reports have highlighted that overwintering individuals use hydrocarbon markings deposited on surfaces by conspecifics to orient toward aggregation sites. In the current study, monthly GC-MS analyses revealed seasonal modifications in the chemical pr...
متن کاملInvestigation of Hydrocarbon-degrading Microbial Communities of Petroleum Hydrocarbon Contaminated Soils in Harghita County, Romania
Microorganisms able to degrade hydrocarbon pollutants (gasoline, and other petroleum derivatives) have been isolated from two contaminated areas (Sândominic and Bălan) by enrichment technique. The hydrocarbon degradative capacity of contaminated sites were determined using “Biometer flasks” (respiratory CO2 production measurement). Total counts and hydrocarbon degrading counts were determined u...
متن کاملChanges in microbial community composition and function during a polyaromatic hydrocarbon phytoremediation field trial.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanism by which phytoremediation systems promote hydrocarbon degradation in soil. The composition and degradation capacity of the bulk soil microbial community during the phytoremediation of soil contaminated with aged hydrocarbons was assessed. In the bulk soil, the level of catabolic genes involved in hydrocarbon degradation (ndoB, alkB, and...
